Bulbs for Biodiversity - Supporting pollinators in the playground

Would you like the opportunity to support pollinators on your school grounds? 🐝🦋

Lanarkshire Climate Action Hub are offering secondary schools in Lanarkshire the chance to be part of Lanarkshire Climate Action Festival (8-21 September 2025) through providing packs of free sustainably sourced wildflower bulbs. 

 

🗓️ The Packs are limited supply and will be allocated on a first come first served basis, with a closing date of 31 August.

🪻 The packs contain over 100 bulbs including bluebells, snowdrops, daffodils and wild tulips and an accompanying guide which explains how to plant them and the benefits of the spring-flowering wildflowers for biodiversity.

 

Bulbs need to be planted in school grounds during the festival (8-21 September).

 

Why are we offering wildflower bulbs?

The Climate Action Festival looks to engage everyone in Lanarkshire – from individuals to community groups to businesses to education establishments. Planting wildflower bulbs in autumn helps to support biodiversity by creating a supply of pollen and nectar for pollinators to feed on in spring.

 

Insects emerging from hibernation over winter, such as Queen Bumblebees, seek out spring-flowering bulbs as vital food sources when identifying suitable nesting sites to establish new colonies.

 

Pollinators such as bees, butterflies, moths and hoverflies all play a vitally important role in plant reproduction, including many of the fruit and vegetables we eat. Planting a selection of wildflowers with different flowering times extends the period when pollen and nectar is available for pollinators.

 

We have selected bulbs which have been sustainably sourced to ensure no harmful chemicals were used during their production.

 

How do you apply?

To apply for the Bulbs for Biodiversity pack, please complete this short questionnaire before 31 August. The packs will be allocated on a first come first served basis and the planting must take place on school grounds (directly into the ground, in raised beds or in suitable containers) between 8-21 September 2025.

Packs will be delivered to successful applicants during the first week of September. 

 

By applying for a ‘Bulbs for Biodiversity’ pack from Lanarkshire Climate Action Hub you confirm that the necessary permissions to plant wildflower bulbs on school grounds have been obtained.
